CUPAR SWIMMER WINS MEDALS COMPETING WITH SCOTLAND SQUAD

13-yr-old Oliver Carter, of Cupar and District Swimming Club, last weekend (1st/2nd March) travelled to Sheffield to compete for Scotland’s Disability Swimming Squad in the National Junior and Youth Swimming Championships.

Oliver was selected to the Scotland Squad last year and has recently become a member of the Scottish Talent Programme where athletes have been identified as possessing the potential to progress on to a British Para-Swimming World Class Programme within a two-year period or represent Great Britain on the world stage.

He competed in numerous events over the weekend with the highlight being his performance in the 4 x 100m Individual Medley relay where he raced the Butterfly leg with the team picking up a Silver Medal. In individual events, Oliver picked up a Bronze medal in the 100m Breaststroke much to his delight.

Speaking of the experience Oliver said: “Travelling with the squad to Sheffield was a fantastic experience. The facilities there were excellent and I enjoyed the opportunity to represent Scotland against teams from across the country. The relay race was truly exciting and I am extremely proud to have been part of the squad who secured the Silver Medal.”

Mark Laing, Head Coach at Cupar and District Swimming Club said: “Ollie is a swimmer who dedicates himself to his sport, possessing real drive and determination to do his best. His selection to the Scotland Squad is a reflection of how highly he is rated at national level and I am confident that last weekend is the beginning of a long and successful swimming career for him.”

At the Fife Disability Championships, held on Friday 7th March at the Michael Woods Centre in Glenrothes, Oliver competed in four races where he went on to win Gold in the 100m IM and 50m Fly and Silver Medals in the 50m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle to reinforce his position as one of the counties most talented up and coming disability swimmers.
