A long, hard weekend of competition saw our swimmers racing for the first time in 2014. Having been back to training for only one week, the swimmers were faced with the daunting task of competing in the 50m long course pool in Edinburgh. Having secured their qualifying times way back in October at Prestonpans, our swimmers went on to produce some outstanding swims accrediting themselves and the club positively.

Saturday morning had Catriona and Katie in the water doing 100m Fly long course which is a very challenging race. Both competed well and enjoyed the experience. The boys then followed in the Backstroke setting a clutch of personal bests leading to big smiles all round. The girls Freestyle was highly competitive with our swimmers placing well within their heats. The Breaststroke heats finished off the morning session with Max swimming close to PB and both Findlay and Lewis Baillie producing great swims with Lewis qualifying for the evening final ceded 6th.

In the afternoon Euan Baillie raced a thrilling 200m IM narrowly missing out on a PB. The boys relay teams produced two excellent races in both the IM and Freestyle leading to very positive coverage by the commentary team. The final of the 100m Breaststroke was an exciting affair with Lewis swimming even faster than his heat time to secure 6th place overall. The gala finished up around 7.45pm leading to a lot of swimmers sleeping in cars on the way home!!

Sunday morning had them back in the water at 9am with Club Captain Euan Baillie the first to race in the 100m Butterfly where he delivered a strong performance setting an excellent new PB. The girls Backstroke followed with confident performances delivered and a well-deserved PB for Katie Ross who won her heat convincingly. In the boys Freestyle both Adam Young and Lewis Baillie were on top form setting first-rate PB’s.

The afternoon saw the boys in for the 200m IM. Adam Young, once again, stepped up to the plate and reinforced his position as one of the most capable ten-year-old swimmers in the district by taking a huge chunk out of his PB and securing the last time that he needed to secure a place in this year’s Scottish Swimming District Regional Programme. One of the last races of the day fell to Max who moved strongly through the field in his race to deliver another club PB and finish his weekend off on a high note.

Overall this was a challenging meet for our swimmers who had enjoyed a lengthy break over the festive period. However, all of our swimmers showed their genuine talent and determination to do well, working hard to produce their best. This was the largest squad we have taken to the Royal Commonwealth Pool for many years and I’m hopeful that next year we will return with a larger, stronger and even more competitive squad.
